The Argument for Brevity
Brevity values precision. Hemingway’s six word story, tweets, headlines, each delivers impact without excess. A well crafted short sentence is efficient, memorable and clear.
Cognitive load theory supports this: the brain filters information, and clarity improves retention.
Overloaded writing dilutes meaning.
The fewer words, the easier comprehension becomes.
Dopamine studies show short form content is addictive.
Quick hits of information trigger pleasure and keep readers engaged.
In a fast paced world, attention is scarce, and concise writing respects that.
Short-form content spreads faster, is easier to recall, and is universally accessible.
Mark Twain once wrote, “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” Cutting words requires skill.
The Argument for Depth
Depth values immersion. Novels, essays, long-form content engage readers beyond surface level understanding.
Studies show deep engagement builds emotional connection and transfers ideas into long term memory.
People bingewatch TV series, listen to multi hour podcasts, and read long articles when the content demands attention.
The problem isn’t length, it’s quality. A well told story captivates regardless of length.
Short form summarizes but often lacks nuance. You can reduce Moby Dick to a paragraph, but the summary isn’t the experience.
Brevity is a spark, fleeting but impactful. Depth is a fire, lasting and transformative.
Which Wins?
It depends. For education, brevity aids retention. For entertainment, depth enhances experience. Both have their place.
Two versions of this post exist.
If you found this version boring, I hear you, and implore you to check out the long form version.
If you have read both Which do you prefer? Let me know in the comments.
I see a tie match here. ring ring ring.
One is chess with hours spend on and time left behind, forgotten for deep involvement sake. The other is tic-tac-toe quick and fun.
You're right it depends upon mood. Sometimes you're in a deeeeeeeeeep dive exploring, bit by bit suspense unraveling mood the other you just want to read few words that shoo the lingering boredom/doubt/worrisome away.
And well i'm both:
Playing tic tac toe in some split lethargic moments of boredom to get a lil refreshment. And chess for hours moving pieces, taking long hours indulging in exploring stories (possibilities) behind every action as turning pages after pages discovering something new with every turned page with every new move.
And believe me while i'm reading something loooong i take a break and read some short quotes or some short story and it's astonishing that i mostly stummble upon words that resonates what i'm currently reading and makes it more interesting. Like both brief and depth tangling twisting turning making the final product more exciting..
