An extra hour? Family, always.

This was great Mark! I too am trying to be more cognizant of my time purchases.🤑

Thanks MJ, I think you're right, but ask me again when I've just woken up and I'd probably tell you sleep!

That's so interesting, considering the thing I omitted from my reply to the Note you made about the time receipt was that when I did my time audit, I, too, was completely baffled by how much time I lose to driving. I only "go into the office" twice a week and still, all those trips to the grocery store, or to appointments, or to see other people... It was a hugely staggering "expense"! Great job on the article.

Thanks Tiffany, I think the next time I do this I will track the things I do at work and include them too, even though I’ve little choice about them, because I drive quite a lot at work too, so i could probably increase my driving “cost” by around a third, and I don’t get to listen to anything fun or entertaining in the car at work as all of the sound systems are disabled!

Wow! You really took on the challenge in a methodical and literal way! It's pretty eye opening when we track how we spend our precious time. It sure got me thinking. I always say that social media, while it has its benefits of connection and humor and cute animals, is actually a terrible time suck. I certainly will be thinking how my time is wasted rather than spent going forward. Thanks for this! Love, Virg

It can be huge. Substack is certainly social media and I'm kind of limiting the time I spend here compared to when I first started, but it's just different to the endless memes, arguments and one upmanship that you see elsewhere. So I'm happy to "spend" some time here. Thanks for reading Virg.

I absolutely love the layout of your article, was that created from native Substack web app or? Fantastic writing too, goes without saying :)

Thanks Bobby, appreciate that. It's nothing special, just added on the website, the images I made with ChatGPT or Excel.

I sometimes wish we could use custom layouts but at least it cuts down on some decisions on what to include, makes it more about the writing than having a sparking layout.

Soooooo now that i count my time wasted then i guess 60% of my life time wasted on making decisions (which were in the end turns out as "wrong decisions") and only 10% was a bit productive and 30%... daydreaming 😂

Anyways Sir as always your words steered me back on the right track. I see a blurry silhouette of my home in the midst of a thick mist 🙃

I think the longer you spend making a decision the more likely you'll end up regretting it, because in your mind you have knowledge of all of the other possibilities you've passed up and how maybe they could have been better.

Make a snapshot decision however and know that you're going to live with it and move on with your life and suddenly that's what happens.

Daydreaming time isn't always wasted time. Good ideas come from daydreamers!

You're right Sir i should hurry up and decide once and for all 🫡

Oh daydreaming can lead to procrastination if not snap out of it sooner 😅

Maybe introduce “daydreaming time” you can have yourself however long you like, but when the timer goes off, you need to be out of daydream land and into action 😂⏰

😂😂 that should work IF the daydreaming does not turn into a lullaby..

Well that’s ok too because lullabys count as background music and background music helps focus 😂

This is incredible, Mark. The level of detail & the reflection on what’s actually worth our time. Just brilliant :)

My husband loves gaming and, if I understood this right, you can see how many hours people spend on a certain game (?). He saw someone on the network had clocked over 500 hours on a given game and was amazed. Until he checked his own time and realised he’d spent about the same. I think that really shocked him. He spent the whole last weekend well away from his TV!

Thanks Dom, yes, it’s an eye opener isn’t it. Some of the online games can really suck you in as they’re more than just games, they can be social events too if you play with friends so I would tend to treat those a bit differently than single player games.

Someone at work was playing Candy Crush or a similar game on their break and I asked what level they were on and it was something ridiculously high like 4,456 and when I asked how long it took to complete a level on average they said “about five minutes, but some of them you have to do multiple times” I of course did the maths and they had spent over two full weeks of their life moving digital sweets around!
